Rob VanWert is joining McGraw Morris as a partner,  after having served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Detroit, Michigan.   Rob specializes in the defense of police liability claims.  

Rob began his legal career as a trial attorney in 2007.  He has litigated hundreds of cases during his career, including a significant number of successful jury trials  in Michigan’s state and federal courts.  Early in his career, Rob achieved the role of Major Crimes Prosecutor for Oakland County, Michigan, responsible for trying the most serious criminal cases.  As an Assistant United States Attorney, assigned to the Violent and Organized Crime Unit, Rob was responsible for managing and litigating long-term, complex federal actions.  Much of his work over his 15 years has involved the justification and validation of actions taken by police officers and federal agents in the areas of warrant procurement, search and seizure, lawful arrest and the use of force.    

Rob proudly attended Michigan State University as an Evans Scholar, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science / Pre-Law with High Honors.  He received his Juris Doctorate from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 2007, graduating cum laude.  While in law school, Rob served as a Managing Editor of the Federal Communications Law Journal, received the Scribe Award for Excellence in Legal Writing, and attained Top Brief Honors in the Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition.

When not practicing, you can find Rob next to his wife cheering on their two young children as they compete in youth baseball and soccer games or in a Northern Michigan trout stream.
